Jan Du Toits River
Jan du Toits River Info (Sept 2010)

The Cape Piscatorial Society and the MCSA are in the process of renewing special temporary access arrangements with Cape Nature.

The CPS will most likely be allocated 2 group bookings per month.

We will be allocating this limited access on a ‘luck-of-the-draw’ basis for the weekend group and a ‘first-come-first-serve’ basis for the midweek group.

Members will be notifeid of the Luck Draw date in the newsletter

It should be noted that the JDT’s is a tough, potentially dangerous, wilderness area. No-one should consider going up the kloof without someone who has been before and if they are not 100% fit and healthy.

· Please note that no-one should under any circumstances attempt to obtain a permit for Jan Du Toits Kloof from any of the Cape Nature booking offices, as this permit arrangement is a special one devised to deal temporarily with the current situation. The kloof is closed at all other times.

· The permit must be carried by the leader of the group and produced on request (such request to include the landowners, Mr. and Mrs. Van Zyl). A copy of the permit must be visibly displayed inside the windscreen of one of the cars where they are parked. The leader of the group must be a CPS member, but it is not essential that the others be members.

· No more than 8 persons may enter the Kloof in each visit period.

* The leader must telephone the Van Zyls on 023 3443746 in advance to advise of the anticipated time of arrival and the number of vehicles. The Van Zyls may request an access fee of R10,00 per person. The Van Zyls must not be disturbed on arrival or departure and groups should accordingly arrive after sunrise and depart before sunset. The access fee may be left with the most senior farmhand available.

* The old CapeNature parking area was destroyed in last years floods. Until further notice, vehicles should be parked as close to the Kloof as circumstances permit, taking care not to obstruct the road, the roadworks or the Van Zyls’ farming operations. Vehicles are parked and left entirely at the owner’s/driver’s risk.

* The Kloof is to be regarded as a wilderness area and CapeNature will not be responsible for the provision of any facilities or services.

* All persons entering the Kloof do so entirely at their own risk and neither CapeNature nor any of their employees will be liable for any loss arising from injury, death or any other cause whatsoever.

* No animals may accompany a visiting group.

* No fires are permitted.

* All rubbish must be removed.

* Human excrement and toilet paper must be disposed of as far (at least 50 metres) from the watercourse as possible, by the “cat” method - in a shallow hole 15-20cm deep and covered with soil.

* The leader of each group is responsible for the safety and conduct of all the members of his/her group.

* Members are encouraged to report back on the condition of the Kloof and its flora and fauna.
